FAQs for International Campers
MTC is uniquely suited to teenagers and our emphasis on diversity and quality of staff and programming has made us a leader in cultural exchange for teens throughout the world.
Here are answers to some commonly asked questions that pertain to campers arriving from around the world. If you have additional questions or concerns, contact us and we will reply within a day or so.
How many international campers come to MTC?
About 20% of our population is from outside the USA. All activities and cabin activities are instructed in English. The immersion into the American culture is part of the cultural experience for our internationals.
Will international campers be in a cabin with other non-English speakers?
Due to the size and capacity of some cabins, there is some likelihood that international campers may share a cabin with others from around the world. Where possible, we arrange cabins with a good mix of Americans and International campers. Very little time is spent in the cabins each day, and our counseling staff do a very good job of maintaining an English-speaking cabin.
Do you offer English lessons?
Yes, we do offer one hour per day of a regular activity week, at your request. The cost for English lessons is $50.00 for the entire length of stay.
How do international campers get to camp?
Campers fly into either Boston Logan Airport (BOS) in Massachusetts (a nominal transportation fee will be charged), or Portland International Jetport (PWM) in Maine (no additional charge) for pick-up by our staff chaperones. Camp is located approximately 2 hours from Boston, and 45 minutes from Portland by car. Staff chaperones accompany groups of campers directly to camp.
How do we pay for camp fees?
All payments to Maine Teen Camp must be made in the form of a bank wire transfer, VISA or MasterCard payment, or by a check drawn in US dollars from a bank located within the USA. Please contact us directly for wire transfer bank information.
How do families communicate with their international camper while they are at camp?
Our international campers have designated phone time in the morning each day that they may use to call home. It is encouraged that you bring an international telephone card number that they may used while at camp. We do also offer international phone cards for purchase in our camp store, but these are somewhat costly.
Each camper is also provided with a free email account (firstname.lastname@mtccamper.com). This is the easiest and most efficient way to communicate!
